Here's a thing I made a few years ago. I don't know what it would be called. It's not a picture, and it's not a sculpture. It's made of thin bits of acrylic paint stuck on a board.
When I used to work with acrylics, after each session I'd shave the dried paint from my "palette" (a white dinner plate). One day I started putting the shavings in a plastic cup, rather than throwing them out. Over a period of about a year I accumulated quite a few cups of the acrylic shavings. As each cup filled I would set it on a shelf. They became sort of a diary of the pictures I had made, little scraps or remnants that reminded me of the pictures (almost all of which I've thrown away - they were generally awful).
One day I cut a board about 2 X 2 1/2 feet and started gluing the bits to the board, keeping them in chronological sequence. So, this thing basically records a year or so of "art." I love its texture and how it looks. You can't tell from the photo, but it's somewhat three dimensional, because some of the chips stick out almost an inch from the board.
Anyway, I'm planning to do another, but I don't work with acrylics any more. So, each time I make a watercolor picture I'll separately make acrylic chips that somewhat match the colors of each picture. When I have enough, I'll make another visual diary of the chips. I guess I'll try to keep up with this over the next year or so and hope I can make a decent whatever-you-call-it.
