Sometimes when I travel I take a little album with me, because occasionally I meet people who, upon learning that I like to paint, ask, "So....what kind of pictures do you paint?" It's easier just to show them, rather than trying to describe the types of pictures I make. On this trip, I showed the pictures to some people who were staying at the same B&B where I stayed. Out of the 50 or so pictures in the album, these are the two that they all seemed to agree were their "favorites." (I think I've posted both of these on this blog before.)
Each of these is about 3 1/2 X 5 1/2 inches.
Even though it's always nice to hear that someone likes a picture I've made, I have to admit that I always hope someone will pick out a picture that I think stands out. I mean, I like both of those pictures and, in fact, one of the blossom pictures I'm working on now was motivated by the first one above. And yet, I wouldn't have chosen either one if I had to say, "That's my favorite."
Interestingly, I showed the same group of people the postcards I had printed and told them they could each take one. Without exception, they all wanted the one that shows that "canted cascade" picture, rather than the ones that had the blossom pictures.
And also, for the millionth time (rough estimate) I heard the same two questions I get from so many people: "How long did this thing take you to paint?" and "What goes through your mind when you're painting something like this?" My answer to both questions is usually: "I have no idea." I'm still waiting for the day when someone says, "You don't sell these things. How do you justify to yourself the amount of time you invest in them?" The answer to that question is one I really don't know.
